I have been waiting for your commentary on this film before even contemplating watching it.

Now, I wonder how I lived in London for over 12 years and never went, nor heard of this famous Infernos nightclub. I probably spent too much time at G-A-Y Late (RIP)

Ahaha, well I am sure G-A-Y could also work in this context.

Somehow I always knew about Infernos even though I didn’t live nearby. When I ended up there it was a short of surreal experience but I’ll always treasure it 😂

Love this! Wasn’t expecting your WH review to take me back to my 90s London days, but there we are!

It's all thanks to Margot and her unexpected Infernos connection - the club that keeps on giving!

Thanks for the post Cristina, it is fun. Here another survivor of Infernos circa 2006-7. As per policy, I can't recall much, other than a lot of (opposite-of-gothic) darkness, sticky dance floor (was it a carpet? really? Oh lord) and the following interaction: a guy came to me to ask if I was "mixed race" (sadly I am quite obviously not, and I was quite chuffed-omg do i look brazilian?). This is to confirm how dark and under-the-effects the nights are there. It is non-stop "murder on the dancefloor" as the sountrack of her other film...

As for the film, I feel lazy about it, probably will end up watching on a plane or the like, but will not cough up the £20 at the picturehouse. The way I feel about Fennel's filmography is: yeah, this is ok (1st film: "Promising young woman") and guilty pleasure ("Saltburn"). You know she is pressing certain levers every 20 minutes to get a reaction, it is clockwork. I still have flashbacks of the bath scene in "Saltburn", but at least at is good to know when one is being manipulated, and just enjoy it...

Ha - I think not remembering much about it is the common denominator of the experience and indeed Infernos survivor has both a terrifying and very intriguing aura about it 😂

Among the many things I've read about this film, someone said in earnest that Fennell should direct videoclips because she does have a good eye to create memorable images.

I thought that was a good way to describe her directing style and the effect of her films.

I still remember much of Saltburn, which I went to see very reluctantly out of curiosity but which I liked more than I expected, while films I've watched a couple of weeks ago and are already a blur.

Like you I feel there is something in her style that feels contrived and makes it a bit more difficult for me to get into the story. Having said that, I think I may need to watch Wuthering Heights again now that I can look at it from the Infernos survivor point of view 😂

Agree on the video clip style and the visuals, which I like. I asked a group of 17-year-olds who had just watched it: they had loved it but when I mentioned "oh, what about the ghost hand in the window?" they said that scene was not there!!! As I have not revisited "Wuthering Heights" (novel) from my late teens, I have forgotten a lot, but that is the image that stuck in my mind, and Fennel has not included it!! I know it is her own adaptation, but for me, that means I will handle it with caution and no expectations when I see it in said plane. I will take it as a tour in the moors of Yorkshire, probably my favourite part of this country...

No, that scene is not there but towards the end they show the window with Cathy's names written in it. However, if you get around to watching it, you'll see there are some visually stunning scenes, including of the moors.

This is fantastic! Some great lines, and I think I need to watch the film now...

I have not thought about Infernos in a long time! I have been exactly once in 2008 - my pals and I had a very, very silly night. The following day, having barely slept, we went to Wembley to watch Leeds Utd lose 1-0, then had, I would say, the worst journey of my life getting home from London to Leeds. Ah, the glory days...

Thanks, Andy! If you've been to Infernos back in 2008 you are well placed to really appreciate this peculiar take on Wuthering Heights 😂 Once the memories start hitting it's like having a revelation!

I knew there had to be a reason...!

Cristina Carmona Aliaga's avatar

That film -and everything that happens in it- hasn't been created for noting 😂

That’s so reassuring, Cristina. Thank you…I’ve been losing sleep over this seemingly impossible conundrum…why…how…?

I told myself I wasn't the target audience and it was fine. But now that my Infernos night have come back to mind I am not so sure 😂

You’re right, I missed this take 😂. I was hoping you would write something about the film! I can’t believe I’ve never been to Infernos…

There are better people discussing the movie out there in so many ways that I had little to add. However, once I learned about the Infernos connection I knew I was in possession of the truth 😂

Never been to Clapham. Haven’t seen the film. Really enjoyed the article. Thanks for the laugh.

Thanks for reading! The power of Infernos is such that I'm sure only reading about it is enough for people to imagine its charm 😂
